CONCEAL | REVEAL
2015 marks the 20th year of the collaboration between choreographer Russell Maliphant and Lighting Designer Michael Hulls. Together they have developed a unique and unparalleled language between light and movement that is acclaimed the world over. In 2016 Michael was awarded a second Knight of Illumination award for Conceal | Reveal.
During Maliphant’s hugely successful career he has received many of the highest theatrical accolades including an Olivier Award, two South Bank Show Awards and three Critics’ Circle Awards. Similarly, Michael Hulls has won several awards including an Olivier for Outstanding Achievement in Dance and two Knight of Illumination awards.
Conceal | Reveal features a quintet: Piece No 43, and a solo: both, and for former Royal Ballet dancer Dana Fouras. With a commissioned score by Mukul and costumes by Stevie Stewart.
"For two decades, Michael Hulls and Russell Maliphant have been exploring the alchemy of light and dance – light that can gild a moving body with metallic radiance, dissolve it into shimmering atoms, reconfigure it in space. Together, they have produced some of the most purely beautiful images I’ve seen on stage, and the work that opens their 20th anniversary programme is no exception.
– Judith Mackrell, The Guardian
"The extraordinary partnership between the master of slow-release dance energy Russell Maliphant and the sorcerer of light Michael Hulls has lasted for two decades ... It ends with a coup de theatre as Hulls’ rectangular panels of light in Piece No.43 create the illusion that the dancers are floating above the stage. Magic? No. Just a trick of the light."
– Neil Norman, The Stage
"Conceal | Reveal is an evening of dazzling physical poetry that leaves you at once rejoicing in Maliphant and Hull’s long partnership and craving the next 20 years, too."
– Mark Monahan, The Telegraph
"Maliphant's serene creations lit with chiaroscuro genius by Michael Hulls"
